Bristol & Somerset Wedding Awards 2017

It’s been a while since we’ve put up a blog post from CBS but this was too important not to share! We are so proud to say that Cards by Sophie won the Wedding Stationer category at the Bristol and Somerset Wedding Awards 2017 that were held last month, making it 3 years in a row!

We would of course like to say a huge Thank You to our wonderful couples who got married in 2016 that voted for us, it was lovely to read all the kind comments left for us.

This years theme at the wedding awards was Moulin Rouge and we had a great evening as well as supporting a great charity – The Wedding Wishing Well Foundation which organises and funds weddings for terminally ill people. The Bristol & Somerset Wedding Awards 2015

As some of you may know we were entered into the Bristol & Somerset Wedding Awards 2015. The awards aim to recognise service of excellence within the wedding sector and this is done by getting previous year’s clients voting and made fair by our judging panel so that every business however big or small has the same chance of winning.

Today we meet Adam West, owner of West 70 Photography.

Introduce yourself and your company!

I’m Adam from West 70 Photography. We’re a photography studio based in Downend, Bristol who specialise in weddings, studio portraiture and event photography.

What made you start your company?

I’ve worked in the wedding industry since I was 19 (ten years now!), West 70 Photography came about from the idea that not everyone wants the same thing when it comes to photography. So we stripped out all of the extra services and we’re left with a simple and affordable package, which has proven to be very popular!

Can you give us a typical ‘day in the life of’ – we’d love to know what you do day by day, even the what-might-seem-like-boring bits!

I think anyone who is or ever has ran their own business knows that you spend a great deal of time on things like e-mails, phone calls and general admin. We always starts our day by going through all the correspondence we’ve received overnight (typically a few wedding and studio enquiries) and then we get to work on editing. We edit some sort of content most days of the week, be it a wedding, something from our studio photo-shoots or something else. We also squeeze in things like meetings with our customers and local businesses. We like being busy!


What do you enjoy most or what is your favourite part of your job?

The wide variety of people we get to meet. It’s really lovely to meet so many different people, especially people from the local area, and get to know them. This helps with the photography side of things as well – building a relationship with your subject is very important. We’re lucky that we get to work with lots of people.

How do you manage to mix your busy schedule with home and family life? Some secrets to your success please!

I co-own the business with my other half, Marcus. We work together every day and spend pretty much all of our time together. People often comment on how we manage to do this and not go insane! It’s really lovely actually because we can still be getting work done but spend time with one another. That being said, we’re also very strict about when is work time and when isn’t – it just so happens that most of the time IS work time!


What top tip would you give couples that are getting married?

Think about what you want. I know that sounds simple but it’s often greatly overlooked. Don’t let other people (be it friends, families, suppliers) tell you what you should like. If you like something, then go with it. Having a clear idea of your expectations will help in all areas of your wedding planning.

If you’re already married, what one thing do you wish you’d done differently?

We had a civil partnership a few years ago, however Marcus and I are getting married properly in 2015. Not many people get to have a second go, so this will be our chance to get things done just-so!

What has been your most unusual request and did you manage to fulfil it?

It depends on what you would classify as unusual! I always tell our customers that nothing they tell me will shock or surprise me any more! My personal favourite was when a couple had their dogs at the wedding (including dressing them in some very fetching bow-ties). That still makes me smile.

How long do you usually take from start to finish with a couple? Please explain the process that you run through with clients so our readers can schedule it all in…

Typically a customer will get in touch about their wedding date. We then check our availability and hopefully we’re free. Then we go ahead and get them booked in (due to our pricing we tend to get booked up very quickly, so we recommend our customers book as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment). We then tend to correspond by either e-mail or phone for a while, answering any questions etc. We always schedule a meeting about one month before the wedding so that we can meet up and talk over all the plans for the day – not just the photographs. I like to know all the details! Once the meeting is done then it’s time for the wedding, that always flies by. After the wedding itself is over it’s time for us to edit the images. Depending on the time of year this can take us up to 8-12 weeks (summer being our busiest time). We always keep our couples up to date and they’re welcome to check the status with us at any time. Once we’ve edited all the images we put them on a disc and get it sent over to our customers. They get all the images plus copyright permission. Because we also do studio photography a lot of our wedding customers come back to us – so it’s never really goodbye!


When do you recommend booking in, please tell us how much notice do you need and how far should couples book in in advance of the wedding?

We recommend booking us as soon as possible. Our price for our standard wedding photography package is only £295 – so you can image this is quite popular. In short, the sooner the better. It’s just turned 2015, we’ve already had enquiries for 2018!

Summer Orders Part 2!

Happy New Year!!

After a busy couple of months we have finally managed to post part 2 from our summers orders. This post will include some of our ‘On the Day’ items that have left us over the last few months.

First up we have the on the day items from Gemma & Ben’s wedding. They went for matching table plan, table name cards, post box, guest book & favour boxes that doubled up as place cards in our ‘Beau’ design in white & purple:

Our pearl design was as popular as ever over the summer with these orders. White & pink Order of Service, cream & purple menus and also cream & mocha table plan cards with matching menus: DSCF0593 DSCF0597  DSCF0709 DSCF0706

We have also had a few Bespoke orders over the summer. The first are these diamante starfish place cards for an oversees wedding. We did these A7 size and put a little slot in the back so our Bride could slip in a lottery ticket for her guests!

Our next Bespoke order was for Jane & Ned’s wedding celebration. They carried their zebra print theme through from their invites to their place cards, table plan & table numbers:DSCF8004 DSCF8008 DSCF8022

Pink has been a favourite colour over the summer with these white & pink ‘Monogram’ place cards and white & fuschia ‘Brigitte’ guest book:

Our ‘Vintage’ design has also been popular in dusky pink shades. The Order of the Day we did half in English & half in Hungarian!

Here are a couple of pictures taken at one of our couple’s wedding and sent to us. This is our ‘Carnival’ design in green & yellow floral pattern. We did mini A7 size individual menus for Paula & Bron’s wedding with their menu choices on. We also did a mini table plan for them as they only had a few tables:

Navy and white has also been very popular with matching place cards, favour boxes and menus in our ‘Botanica’ design finished with yellow crystals:


Also in white and navy were these ‘Heart’ design place cards & favour tags:

This is one of our Bespoke orders in navy and white. Our couple had a simple double bow design and had matching Order of Service, place name tags, post box & a sign to put on a basket of flip flops the Bride provided so the ladies could kick off their heels!

Finally we have these matchinf table plan, table number cards & place cards in our ‘Marie’ design in a peach & white colour theme. We used white lace, white & peach paper roses and light peach Swarovski crystals:

So many different designs & colour ways over the last few months, no two orders are ever the same!
